The Rain Queen for solo guitar

A tone poem based on two field expeditions around the late 1980’s  to visit the Fifth Dynasty of a long rein of female rulers, whose powers and supernatural endowments for rain-making were famed throughout Southern Africa. The music reflects the mystical and earthy elements I experienced there. The opening tremolo is reminiscent of the early morning mist, while pulsing drum rhythms (tambor effects) confirm this is a return to tribal Africa.  A virtuosic and dramatic middle section leads to a finale which culminates in the idea of falling rain, created in continuous rasguedos and trills.
