Enjoy classes, workshops, rehearsals, socialising and plenty of beautiful music making over 3 days. Meet where the world’s best guitar tutoring greets you at your level. The retreat culminates with a Sunday afternoon Showcase Concert and Certificate Awards Ceremony. All participants get to strut their stuff in the closing Guitar Orchestra Performance.
The Guitar Orchestra Retreat Course (GORetreat) is open to ALL, but is most suitable for young adults, and adults.
- Due to the personal attention afforded each participant there is a limit on the number of spaces. Early booking advised.
- Participation in the full course (over 3 days), from 9h00 to 17h00 daily, includes: the welcome event, morning tea/biscuits and buffet lunches daily, concerts, participation in a specialist master class, observing other master classes, ensemble/orchestral playing twice daily, and participating in the showcase concert and award ceremony, or exclude performing in a master class and participate in everything else.
- Observing only is also an option.
- Evenings are free to practise, socialise and enjoy what Newtown and the Wales countryside has to offer.

Surrounded by nature so you can immerse yourself in your favourite instrument with other fellow enthusiasts, while treating yourself to peace, tranquility and a whole lot of inspiration. Accommodation is in the quaint , rural village of Newtown, just across the River Severn from Plas Dolerw , where the days guitar activities take place. From B ’n B’s to boutique or luxury hotels there is accommodation to suit most pockets, and the same can be said for the many varied restaurants.
The founding director, Avril Kinsey is resident composer, teacher and conductor for the Guitar Orchestra Retreat. She is an acclaimed classical guitarist having studied with the world’s best, including Parkening, Bonell, Yepes and Bitetti. She has performed in over 15 countries across 4 continents, and won first prize in the Adcock Ingram Classical Guitar Competition. She has recorded 7 albums for Art Music Records, and composed over 35 works for classical guitar, with 5 published music books including her most unique and renowned editions, Guitar Music from Africa, and her guitar concerto Recuerdos de Andalucia. She was awarded her Masters of Music degree cum laude, and obtained a Doctorate of Music in Composition for a 93-minute portfolio of orchestral and chamber guitar works. She gives master classes and lectures at festivals around the world, including one at Julliard in New York, and in 2019 she lectured at the GFA in America. Kinsey was warded an Astris Lifetime Achievement, for her outstanding contribution to music education.

Yvonne Bloor is an acclaimed performer, both in the UK and abroad, a teacher and a composer with 3 published books of her compositions, which have been described as ‘excellent’ by Classical Guitar Magazine. She teaches both privately and at the University of Leister. She obtained her Master of Music in performance under Craig Ogden, and also pursued studies with Nicola Hall and Michael Lewin of the Royal Academy of Music. She is a Fellow of the Royal Schools of Music and has a Licentiate from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and the London College of Music. Her composition, ‘Promise’, is published by Trinity College of Music in the 2016 examination series, while ‘Majesty’, which was composed for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations is included in the Jubilee Time Capsule. Her second CD, ‘Evocation’ released in 2017, features only her own original compositions for solo guitar. Bloor also examines for the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and Trinity Guildhall.

HOSTING THE EVENT IS FCTAMusic, a registered cultural charity (#077942) devoted to the cause of music.
Their mission is to promote musical excellence through education, performance and cultural events.
The Guitar Orchestra Retreat (GORetreat) will be FCTAMs most prestigious event for 2020. Funds raised from FCTAMs events go towards sponsoring talented, but financially challenged students, and towards their cost of Trinity College of London music exams.
Steven Felmore has served on the committee of FCTAM as Chairman for several years. He has steered the charity to great success in several previous events. His passion for music and the guitar has been a lifelong commitment, which saw him complete a recital for his LTCL performers in classical guitar in 2011. Besides music teaching he is an accomplished artist, illustrator and graphic designer. In his early years he performed electric guitar in his own jazz/rock group. He brings a wealth of stylistic and musical knowledge to his role as Assistant Teacher at the Guitar Orchestra Retreat.

GETTING THERE AND ACCOMMODATION
There are excellent transport connections from most major towns in Wales and the UK, including plane, road, rail, bus and the A483 motorway, which runs through Newtown
The nearest AIRPORT is Liverpool, just over 60 miles away from Newtown, or Birmingham at 67 miles.

Follow the A483 through Newtown, passing Tesco’s and Kwik Fit on the left, until you reach a set of traffic lights. Turn right (by MacDonald’s) and follow the road until you reach a roundabout. Go straight on towards Aberhafesp. The drive to Plas Dolerw is approximately 200 metres on the left. A large red sign ‘Plas Dolerw’ and a yellow sign ‘St Mary’s School’ are at the entrance to the drive.

Follow the A483 through Newtown to the traffic lights on New Road. You will note a large church on the bank to your right (St David’s), St David’s House office block on your left and the Baptist Church in front/left, with pillars and steps outside. Turn left, follow the road past Oriel Davies Gallery on your left and Argos on your right. This is where you can turn left to park in the Local Authority car park. If you are driving on to Plas Dolerw, follow the road over the River Severn to the roundabout. Turn left towards Aberhafesp. The drive to Plas Dolerw is approximately 200 metres on the left. A large red sign ‘Plas Dolerw’ and a yellow sign ‘St Mary’s School’ are at the entrance to the drive.

PARKING for staff and blue-badge holders is immediately outside Plas Dolerw. All others may park at a Local Authority car park in Back Lane, Newtown, adjacent to the Bus Station. Park at the far end of the car park near Radio Hafren and walk across the River Severn by the suspension foot-bridge. The central path leads to Plas Dolerw – a distance of approximately 200 metres.
